We are all artists. But that does not mean we will all have careers in the arts. While it’s certainly true that a training program should prepare students for professional artistic pursuits, that is by no means the sole purpose of an arts education. It is not even the primary purpose. The main function of an arts education is to instill values and principles that will serve students in whatever they choose to do. Values and principles they will carry with them through all of their lives. At HCPAA, we have identified these core principles as follows:

Honesty

We will be truthful in what we say and do.

Authenticity

We will be genuine in who we are.

Respect

We will regard ourselves, each other, our work, our space, and our time with deference.

Openness

We will be teachable and receptive to new ideas and perspectives.

Awareness

We will notice what is happening with ourselves, each other, and our surroundings.

Empathy

We will try to understand and be sensitive to the experiences of others.

Presence

We will be focused and mindful in the present moment.

Courage

We will be bold and fearless in our pursuits.

Curiosity

We will question our assumptions and remain inquisitive.

Confidence

We will be assured in ourselves and in our offerings.

Accountability

We will be responsible for our choices and for our actions.

Objectivity

We will look to evidence to inform our perceptions.

Flexibility

We will adapt to new circumstances with grace and ease.

Expressiveness

We will clearly communicate our thoughts and our feelings.

Creativity

We will explore and generate imaginative possibilities.

Collaboration

We will work with each other in the service of a shared goal.

Discipline

We will be earnest in the development of our skills.

Commitment

We will be dedicated to the task at hand.

Perseverance

We will be determined in the face of challenges.

Leadership

We will try to guide others through our example.

Humility

We will commit to something greater than ourselves.

Positivity

We will expect good things and be focused on solutions.

Encouragement

We will lift ourselves and each other up.

Gratitude

We will be thankful for our gifts, abilities, and opportunities.

Integrity

We will try to conduct ourselves in accordance to these values.

These Twenty-Five Principles form the basis of our philosophy and instruction. While we may not always live up to these ideals, we will strive to be diligent in our pursuit. We will try, try, and keep trying. That is our pledge— to ourselves and to each other.
